Lawn Hill and the Gulf Trip July 2005 by Pat and Ted Baker
8 September 2005
The trip was great, and the people too,
It was quite a buzz meeting sll of you.
All those relaxing days we would spend together
we all had our fun regardeless of weather
Each day we travelled, new highlights came
With no two places ever the same.
At Mitchell we all soaked in the bore
And just in time, as it started to pour.
At Longreach we still had the pouring rain,
Some unbrellas were lost on the big jumbo plane.
You would think that pilots would keep very fit
working 400 switches, in a tiny cockpit.
Then on to Kynuna, at the Blue Heeler Pub
to check out the locale and all have some grub.
Then a walk up the road where that wily old fox
Gave us Waltzing Matilda on his battered squeezebox.
Wow! Beautiful Lawn Hill, up in the stack, what a view!
Saw a cormorant fishing, and he caught quite a few
Then a swim cross the gorge to that beaut waterfall
where the sounds made by nature were music to all
The trip through the gorge in our two man canoe
Left us shaking our heads as we savoured the view
The two days we were there just gave us a peek
And we had to move on; could have stayed there a week
Normanton township saw our great happy bunch
Out back of the Purple Pub where we all had our lunch.
Next morning at daybreak, all hauled out of bed
And off to Karumba where Barramundi are bred.
Then on to Gulflander, that bumby old train,
Our guide told of floods from the 74 rain.
The water went down, one owner checked through the mud
to find, 1800 cattle had drowned in the flood
Undara was great, their was no sign of rain
and after a sleep in a stationary train
we had a bush brekky at the end of the track,
some ate that much they could hardly walk back
We toured Lava Tubes with our knowledgeable guide
we were all given torches as its quite dark inside
Time went so quickly and our time there was gone
And next morning we left, it was time to move on.
When we came to Townsville, thrilled once again,
Driven up Castle Hill to check out the terrain
Our motel was created for those pleasure bent
But we still loved Adels Grove where we slept in a tent.
Then our cruise to Whitsunday, a two pronged affair
Where we buggied round Hamilton and forgot everyone care.
On the way to Whitehaven we all had to dine,
Then some fun on the beach where the sand was so fine.
As each new day dawned, different sights did we see,
all happy people, like a big family
And Robert and Allan really looked after us
In our 'Travelling Home', our mercedes bus.
Our trip was so pleasant, it all went so fast
In no time it seemed, six thousand kilos went past
And then, home again, and so full of zip,
Relaxed and refreshed, by our eighteen day trip
But our memories fade, and, as time goes by
did we see that at Moree or at Mungindi?
But thanks to the poems we can always look back
And recall just what happened out there on the track.
Now in future when thinking of places to see
This trip will form part of a great memory.
so when we think trips, and travel discuss
we know we'd be cared for on your Highlands bus.
