Northern Highland Travel Goes Carbon Neutral
3 December 2007
Award Winning National Tour Operator Northern Highland Travel has gone carbon neutral.
Managing Director Jenny Aitchison has announced that all carbon emissions for domestic tours operated by the company will be offset in an arrangement with Greenfleet. The company had been considering options for reducing their carbon footprint for the last six months.
The company has engaged Greenfleet to assist them in offsetting 271 tonnes of carbon emissions each year. This will offset all carbon generated by their entire fleet, and result in the planting of over $1,000 trees.
"The travel industry contributes approximately 1% of carbon emissions, and of all travel modalities, coaches have the lowest emission of green house gases per passenger kilometre, less than motor cycles, heavy and light rail and air transport", she said.
"Whilst the footprint of our industry is small, it is important for all Australian companies to play their part. The environment is something we all need to act on individually and take responsibility in order to achieve global results."
"While we completed the upgrading of our fleet to meet the European 3 emission standards in March 2007, we wanted to do more."
"We considered the options offered by airlines, where passengers can opt to pay for environmental offsets as an additional ticket cost, however we believe that all transport providers need to take leadership on this issue, and consequently we will be fully funding our domestic coach emissions out of our existing fares at NO EXTRA COST to passengers. It is a little bit we can do to help preserve our environment for future generations."
"We will be considering options in the near future for passengers to offset their airfares purchased from airline operators."
Northern Highland Travel is a national family owned and operated coach and tour operator with a comprehensive touring program in all states and territories of Australia and overseas.
